Baja, California - 2006
AMONG THE GREAT WHALES
Each winter gray whales migrate south from their arctic feeding grounds to Baja California's sheltered Pacific coast lagoons. Their migration is the longest of any mammal, covering more than 10,000 miles.
On January 28, 2006 I flew from Harlingen, TX to Los Angeles, CA and then on to La Paz, Baja California where I went on board the small cruise ship MV Sea Lion. We left at night to sail north to the Sea of Cortez into a strong north wind and big waves that made the first night's sleep difficult. We went north to Isla Carmen, Danzantis, Monserrate and Santa Catalina. Then we headed south to San Jose Del Cabo and out into the Pacific Ocean as far north as Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos to a whale breeding bay. Here we saw mothers with babies. We disembarked at San Carlos and bussed back to La Paz to the airport and flew home. The whale sightings were outstanding and the terrain was desert desolate. It was a great trip without any crowd of tourists. My favorite thing. There was only 45 of us everywhere we went with the exception of a half day in Cabo San Jose.
